Setting the stage
Havana was established in the fifteenth century by the Spanish as their principal port for the shipment of gold and treasure they plundered from the Americas. The striking majesty of the old city derives from this imperial legacy. Having fallen into decay for many decades, the historical center has now been restored to its original splendor.
The four principal plazas of Havana Vieja are the cornerstone of this tour; each plaza with its own lore and landmark structures. Walking along the narrow cobbled streets between plazas, travelers will encounter many of the fine mansions of the original gentry and merchant class now tastefully re-purposed as museums, restaurants, boutique hotels, and cultural centers.
Beyond its physical grandeur, the old city has always been a center of cultural life in Havana. Today this tradition lives on with live music at many venues and the plethora of artist studios and street performers.
